How to Prevent Boredom While Stuck at Home

During the Coronavirus outbreak, most of us are required to stay home. This means we are now required to work from home and go to school from home. This can be a hard adjustment for some. If you’re like me, it can be hard to find things to do while under quarantine. I’ve come up with 6 activities to practice while stuck at home. As always, follow CDC guidelines and practice good, common sense. I have personally done all of these, and they work fine.

Cuddle with your pet

If you have a dog or cat (or both!) they may be happy you’re spending more time with them at home. If you are a dog owner like me (for example), they may be very pleased with this, as dogs are happy just being in their human’s presence. If this is the case, snuggle with your pet. It may be hard to walk them or take them on a run at this time. However, there are other things you can do with them to keep their mind engaged while you’re at home. For instance, there are games that are specifically designed to keep your pet’s mind active. You can find them on Amazon. So, snuggle with your dog or cat. It will provide much needed stress relief for you!

Call a friend

Now would be a good time to check on friends and/or family members. It can be easy to get caught up in the media frenzy surrounding COVID-19. Why not call a friend instead to check on them and their family?

Rest

Now is also a good time to catch up on your rest. While we are going through the motions of our daily lives (work, school, extra-curricular activities, etc.) it is easy to miss out on our rest. Rest is important, no matter how old you are. I cannot stress that enough. There is nothing wrong with taking a refreshing mid-afternoon nap.

Create a new playlist on iTunes, then jam to it

I have practiced everything on this list, and this activity is one of my favorites (it comes after snuggling with my dog!). You can be creative with iTunes. Create a playlist that matches your mood. Download songs you haven’t heard in years. For instance, since I love 80s music, I’ve created an 80s playlist. I’ve also created an oldies playlist with songs I love from the 60s and 70s. I love music, so this practice is very therapeutic for me. Music is healing. Create a new playlist and take yourself back to happier times.

Adult Coloring Books

These are very popular right now. If you haven’t tried it, give it a try. I was one of the skeptics, but I have tried it and love it. It is a very soothing activity and great for practicing self-care and stress relief.

Journal

I keep a journal. I do not write in it daily, but I try to write an entry at least once a week. This is always a soothing activity for me, as I love to write. It does not have to be a literary piece. Write what comes to mind. Is there something in particular weighing you down? Write it out.

These are my favorite things to do while under quarantine. We are living in very stressful times, and I hope this helps. If you are looking for a therapist to help cope with the anxiety/stress from COVID-19, give our office a call. 888-203-0113. We are offering online therapy until further notice.
